Humpday Hacks and Hints

Well, here's the first of our Wednesday "Hacks and Hints"

Remember our background, it's construction.  We built homes for 25 years.

We hope these tips will be useful to any homeowner or do-it-yourselfer that has projects from time to time.

We have a pretty broad experience base so we hope to cover lots of topics.

Ok first one, and boy it's simple but most people don't know the trick:

When you are driving a nail into the end of a piece of lumber especially if it's thin, it may have a tendency to split.  Ideally you could drill a hole first, but maybe you don't have the time or a drill handy.  Instead take the nail and set the head down on a hard surface and tap the pointed tip of the nail with a hammer.  This dulls the point but also spreads the head slightly to make the nail cut through the wood instead of wedging itself through.     Most times the nail can be driven through without splitting the wood. Give it a try the next time the opportunity comes up.
